The case for an autumn check
Nobody discovers a heating fault in July. Heat pumps spend most of the year in cooling mode, and every component on the heating side sits idle while it does: the reversing valve, the auxiliary heat elements, the defrost control, the sequencers.
Any of those can fail or seize during that idle period without producing a single symptom. The failure surfaces on the first genuinely cold night, which is both the night you least want to be without heat and the night when every HVAC company on this coast has a queue.
An autumn check is the entire answer, and it is a short visit.
What gets checked
The heating side needs its own attention, not just a repeat of the cooling service:
- Reversing valve operation, by running the system in heating and confirming it actually switches
- Auxiliary heat elements, confirming each stage energises and draws correctly
- Defrost control operation and the outdoor coil sensor
- Sequencers and contactors on the heat strips
- Refrigerant charge, which affects heating capacity as much as cooling
- Airflow and static pressure, because a restricted system underperforms in both modes
- Thermostat staging and changeover settings, which are frequently left on defaults that do not suit the house
Inland versus coastal
If you are in Freeport or north of the bay, this matters more. Cold snaps land harder away from the Gulf, the heating side works more hours, and a fault has more opportunity to matter.
On the beach the heating demand is genuinely light, but a seized reversing valve still leaves you without heat on the handful of nights you want it, and the check is short.
