What the Comfort Club includes

Membership is $240 a year and covers five things:

Two tune-ups a year, spring and fall, scheduled by us so you do not have to remember. Spring readies the cooling side before the season that matters most here; fall checks the heating side, which has sat unused for eight months.

Priority emergency dispatch, around the clock. Members go to the front of the line.

15% off every repair, with no exclusions.

No after-hours surcharge, on nights, weekends or holidays. The rate at noon on a Tuesday is the rate at midnight on a Saturday.

Front-of-line scheduling, which is what you notice in July when non-members are waiting weeks for a tune-up slot.

It is transferable when you sell the house, and you can cancel at any time.

What a tune-up actually checks

Not a ritual. A specific list of the things that fail here.

The condensate drain, which silts up over a year and blocks on a hot day. If the air handler is in the attic, the overflow finds your ceiling. Clearing it takes minutes and is the highest-value item on the list.

The run capacitor, measured rather than eyeballed. Capacitors degrade gradually and then fail suddenly, on the hottest day, because heat is what finishes them.

Coil condition, inside and out. On the coast the condenser is corroding; inland it is packing with pine needles and pollen. Different cause, identical effect on capacity and running cost.

Refrigerant charge, measured. A system low on charge has a leak, and finding it early is cheaper than finding it after a season of running starved.

Electrical contacts, where salt produces intermittent faults long before it produces a failure.

The arithmetic

Two tune-ups a year at normal rates come close to the membership price on their own, so the discount and the surcharge waiver are effectively what you gain.

The surcharge is where it shows up most sharply. Air conditioning does not fail at a convenient time; it fails during a heatwave, at the start of a guest stay, or on a holiday weekend, because those are the conditions that push a marginal part over the edge. That is also when after-hours pricing applies. Removing it changes the decision you make at 9pm on a Saturday: you call when the problem starts instead of waiting until Monday and hoping, which is how small faults become compressor failures.

Who gets the most from it

Rental and second-home owners. You are not there to notice a problem developing, and a failure during a booking costs far more than any repair. The membership transferring with the house also matters when the property changes hands.

Coastal properties. Salt is working on your outdoor equipment continuously. Regular service is the difference between a condenser that reaches its expected life and one that does not.

Full-time residents. Your system runs most of the year in this climate, so wear parts reach end of life on a schedule driven by run hours rather than calendar years.

What it is not

It is not a warranty, and it does not make repairs free. Repairs are discounted 15% and still quoted in writing before any work starts. Parts and labor are charged as normal, less the discount.

We would rather be plain about that here than have somebody discover the boundary during a call-out.
